Dwalin is a character in The Hobbit. He is one of the twelve companions of Thorin Oakenshield, Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf; son of Fundin; younger brother of Balin; cousin to Óin and Glóin and the first cousin once removed of Gimli.
Dwalin was portrayed by Scottish actor, Graham McTavish.
History
Background
Dwalin was born in Erebor and raised alongside the king's grandson, Thorin Oakenshield. The two of them became best friends from there on out, and came to know each other as brothers-in-arms. However, when Smaug attacked Erebor, Dwalin with his family fled. He later fought and survived in the Battle of Azanulbizar (or better known as the "Battle of Moria.")
It became clear Dwalin would not see his brother, Balin for many years.
An Unexpected Journey
Dwalin later met Bilbo Baggins at his house in Bag End in the Shire without knowing that Gandalf had not warned Bilbo of these things.
Legacy
Dwalin continued living in the Lonely Mountain with his cousin, Glóin and the remaining company (apart from Óin, Ori, and Bilbo)
